Listen to the Fabrics

Last Friday I went to the exhibition titled "Listen to the Fabrics". Many working kimonos worn by farmers and fishermen in Tohoku before the war were shown. It was very interesting exhibition. Tohoku (north part of Japan) was a very poor area. If you have ever watched TV drama "Oshin", you can imagine how their lives were. Mireille, one of my CQ friends in Belgium, who is in her early thirty's like Jo, told me she had watched "Oshin" when she was a elementary school girl. Working people had to wear their clothes, patched and patched to be worn out, though after cleaning they look to be even artistic today. I remembered taupe quilts, which are very popular now.

I felt a bit ashamed, for my CQs must be just for pleasure, not for necessity like those old fabric arts.

Although making a virtue of out a necessity is nice - I think that not needing to patch and repatch clothes all the time is great.

That is like how poor French nobles in the middle ages had to stay in bed all day if their clothes were being washed, and they only had one set of clothes.

What wonderful photos. The colours of the patched clothes are amazing. Please don't feel ashamed about making cq for pleasure - your work is so beautiful, you should feel a pride in doing, and sharing it.
