イギリスの五月の花 May Flowers in England

今回の旅行で楽しみにしていた一つは、いつもこのブログのお客様で日本刺繍をしているキャロルさんに会うことでした。バッキンガムから車で３０分のところに住んでいるので、着いたその日に宿まで来て、近くの古い茅葺のレストランに連れて行ってくれました。バッキンガムから娘のいるノッティンガムに移動するときにはご主人のジョンの車で送り届けてもらいましたし、本当に感謝感激、楽しい時間を過ごしました。
It was a big sansation I met Carol in England. She is doing a Japanese embroidery and a frequent visitor to this blog. She lives very close to Buckingham so we had arranged to see. She invited me to a very nice country pub restrant in the evening I arrived there. Even she and her husband drove me from Buckingham to Nottingham when I moved to see my daughter. Carol, thank you very much for your warm hospitality. Please send my best regards to your handsome John.

彼女がイギリスの花についてこういうことを言っていました。「三月は水仙やカウスリップの黄色、四月は桜やリンゴの花のピンク、五月はサンザシやシャスターデージー、クイーンアンズレースの白、六月はバラが咲いてカラフルに美しいけれど、私は五月の白が一番好き」と。
She told me how she loved the beautiful country view. She said March is a yellow month with Cowslips and daffodils. April is pink with cherry and apple blossoms. And her most favorite May is white with Mayflower, dasies, Queen Ann's lace and etc. June would be more colouful with roses.

外国に行って楽しいのは日本では見たことのない、名前も知らない花があふれるように咲いているのに出会うことです。
I took some photos of flowers I haven't seen here in Japan. I even don't know their names. If someone teach me, I would be very happy.

日本の五月とは景色が違います。気候も土質ももしかしたら水質も、やっぱり風土が違うのだと思います。ちなみに今、宮脇昭さんという方の「木を植えよ！」（新潮選書）という本を読んでいるのですが、”森”にはその国本来の自然に添う形があり、日本の森は元々、照葉樹林であり、人工的に針葉樹林を増やしても、”森”を作ったことにはならないのだそうです。面白いのでご一読をお勧めします。
In a foreign country something is in common　with us and another is different in both culture and nature. I always enjoy them very much.

バッキンガムレース Buckingham Lace

　５月２４日から２８日まで、イギリスのバッキンガムという小さな町に滞在しました。ロンドンのヒースロー空港からオクスフォード経由でバスを乗り継ぎ約三時間です。
町の中心部にあるジェイル・ミュージアムの展示資料の説明によると、昔、その離婚騒動でイギリスの歴史が変わったヘンリー８世の最初の王妃キャサリンが訪問したことがあり、そのときからレース作りが盛んになったとか。刺繍のブラックワークも彼女から始まったように記憶しますが、当時の高貴な女性は皆、刺繍や手工芸に堪能で（レディのたしなみだったのでしょう）、我が身の不遇を刺繍に吐き出していたのかもしれません。後のエリザベス女王が王女の頃、父ヘンリー８世のために刺した美しい作品が残っていますし、そのエリザベスに何十年も幽閉されて最後は処刑された、湖上の麗人として名高いスコットランドのメアリ女王も、素晴らしい刺繍家として有名です。
そのジェイル（監獄）博物館に美しいバッキンガムレースが展示されていました。
I stayed from May 24 to 28 in Buckingham, a small town north of London. It took 3 hours for me to get there by bus. The main purpose of my trip to England was to attend the events of the 60th anniversary of the death of Flora Thompson, an author of "Lark Rise to Candleford". It is her autbiographical fiction of her childhood in a small hamlet called Lark Rise (Juniper Hill) near Buckingham.
I learned Buckingham used to be famous with lace making since 16th century. It was very important mean for country women to earn money until low cost machine laces became popular.










フローラ・トンプソンの「ラークライズ」には隣の家のクイーニーというお婆さんがたびたび登場します。彼女はお天気がいいと庭で一日ミツバチの巣の番をしながらボビンレースを編んでいます。レースが貧しい農村女性の僅かな現金収入だった時代がありました。クイーニーお婆さんは八才で大人と一緒にレースを編み始めたといいます。編み貯めたレースは仲買の人が定期的に買いに来たり、年に一度の近くの町のお祭りのとき、市に売りに行ってお金になりました。ボビンのおもりに使っているビーズには一つずつにいわれがあり、フローラはそんな話を聞くのが好きな子供でした。しかしフローラの子供時代、１８８０－９０年代には手間のかかるボビンレースはすでに安い機械レースの人気に負け、クイーニーお婆さんも趣味で人にあげるために編むだけになっていたようです。
Flora is writing in her book about Queenie, a old woman living her next door. She was only eight years old when she learned and started lace making with adult women. She brought the laces to the Banbury Fair to sell and spent lots of money on that day once a year. She was one of the last lace makers in that century.

マスコット人形 Spirit of Friendship Doll Swap

帰ってきた翌日から息子が３９度の熱を出し、すわ、ハシカか、と思ったらそれは違ったようでした。旅行の後始末、山のような洗濯物の片付け、掃除と、バタバタ忙しくしている内に一週間があっという間に過ぎました。クレージーの方でも、CQI の遅れていたニュースレター作り、新しく始まるＲＲのブロックの用意、自宅での教室の再開、と用事は切れ目なく続きます。
そんな中、旅行中の私より一足早く家に着いてお帰りなさいと出迎えてくれ、壁で見守ってくれているマスコット人形たちです。
When I got back home last week, the dolls from "Spirit of Friendship Dolls Swap" of CQI had been already waiting for me and welcomed my back home.

The left one is from Jackie Y in US. Her beading work is stunning. And the right blue one stitched beautifully is from Jo in NZ.
Judy, Jackie Y and Jo, thank you very much for your lovely dolls. They are comforting me after a long journey. I also appreciate Leslie for hard working as a hostess of this swap. I love all of choices of yours.


CQI のブログにゆくとメンバーがそれぞれに工夫を凝らして作ったたくさんの人形が見られます。みな作り手の思いがこもっていて個性豊かな魅力があり、”お守り”になりそうです。グループでは次に、ジャッキーがクリスマスに向けての交換、パットがシェルターの女性たちの慰めに作って送るボランティアを募っています。

バッグコンテスト The Purse Contest of CQI

旅行中に、CQI のバッグコンテストが終わりました。１月に参加申し込み、５月中旬に作品の写真を送り、下旬にそれによる会員の投票が行われて、一位 Emiko さん（おめでとう！！！）、二位 Lynn, 三位 Debbie、という結果でした。私も出品していましたので、ご紹介します。日本で一番人気のトープキルトをクレージーでやってみたいと思ったのが、色選びの理由です。でもあまりトープにはなっていないかもしれません。しかもブロックのときは我ながらとてもきれいだと思っていたのですが、仕立てたら期待ほどではなく、ちょっとがっかりでした。

While I was away, the Purse Contest of CQI was resulted. The first winner was Emiko, the second Lynn Schoeffler and the third Debbie R. Congratulations to all!! Here's my purse and close-ups. I challenged to make a "taupe crazy quilt". "Taupe colour" quilt is the most popular patchwork in Japan.

旅行前の最後の投稿です。”仕事場拝見”というテーマで、パットにつかまってしまいました。でも旅行前だから良かったのかも。片付いていますから。日本の主婦はみな、リビングのどこかが仕事場ですよね。私も例にもれず、すべてリビングでしています。

パソコンのコーナーです。メールも翻訳もここです。横にダイニングテーブルがあるのですが、そこが本やプリントの山になっていることもよくあることで。
This place is my PC corner.

リビングの延長のサンルームがクレージーの仕事場です。右に積んであるプラスチックケースの中は布です。
I usually using this space for my crazy quilting. You would see some plastic cases of fabrics.

テーブルの上にはピンクッションと、はんぱな刺繍糸やレースやリボンの残りが山になった箱。掃除していて落ちていたビーズを見つけたときもここに。

キャスターつきのキャビネット二つの上にはやりかけのものが山積み。左のかごの中には飾りが終わってつないでもらうのを待っているＤＹＢのブロックや、送られてきたＲＲなど、これからしなければならないものたちです。
On the cabinet there are lots of present projects in progress.


たとえば引き出しの一つはこんなふうになっています。ここの糸の奥にはチャームが詰め込んであります。ステッチのための糸がやたら多くて、この種の糸だけの引き出しがあと二つはあります。

My Blocks of Tradewinds DYB

Tradewinds DYB　の私のブロックも世界を一周する長い旅の後、家に帰ってきました。
My blocks of the Tradewinds DYB have come back home already.


始まったのが１０月でした。Joは刈り入れの季節を美しい秋色で飾ってくれました。
This DYB started last October. Jo embellished this block in beautiful autumn colours.

Leslieの素晴らしいステッチです。
I always adore Leslie's beautiful stitches.


Ｅｍｉｋｏさんの細やかな美しいシームステッチや素晴らしいスタンプワークの蝶はアップでなければその魅力が伝わりません。後でゆっくりとご紹介したいと思います。
The photo doesn't do justice to her neat seam treatments nor beautiful stumpwork of butterfly. I'll show the close-ups later.


Cheryl は愛らしい小鳥と巣を刺繍してくれました。
Cheryl's embellishments reflect this spring season. I love a bird and nest very much.


Anabela が都合で抜けたので、これはCheryl とEmiko さんの合作です。

これらのブロックについては、今日は全体の紹介だけに止め、美しいステッチやモチーフ刺繍は後でゆっくり追々、ご紹介したいと思います。

　ところで３枚、中心に使ったプリントにはたまたま１８９３年というヴィクトリアン時代のカレンダーが印刷されています。私が今翻訳中の本、「ラークライズ」の著者、フローラ・トンプソンは１８７６年にイギリスのオクスフォード州の小さな村に生まれ、１９４７年５月２１日に亡くなりました。１８９０年に郵便局で働らき始めるまでの８０年代の子供時代の農村の暮らしの思い出が本の内容ですから、ちょうどこのカレンダーの風景に重なります。
　そして今年のこの５月が没後６０年にあたり、記念イベントが行われるという連絡が２月に飛び込んできました。このタイミングで行かなかったら、翻訳者としてあまりに怠慢だと思い、飛行機は嫌なのですが、思い切って出かけることにしました。ラークライズのモデルになったジャニパーヒルという村のガイドツアー、彼女の生まれた家の見学、お芝居、音楽会など盛りだくさんの催しがつまっていますので楽しみです。２３日から始まる旅行についても、帰ってから後でまた、ご報告したいと思います。

The three prints I used are the calender of 1893. (I bought them from Flight of Fancy last year.) Flora Thompson, the author of "Lark Rise to Candleford" I am translating now, lived her childhood days in a small hamlet in Oxfordshire, England in those 80's. She was born in 1876, lived there till 1890 and died in Bournmouth on May 21 in 1947.
In this last week of May, lots of her 60th death anniverssary events are held in her native country. When I was invited to these events, I felt I should go. So I will leave next Wednesday.

The Last Block of Tradewinds DYB

恒風ＤＹＢの最後はシェリルのブロックにＥｍｉｋｏさんとの共同作業でした。
This last work for Cheryl's block of Tradewinds DYB was a colaboration with Emiko.


まずＥｍｉｋｏさんがこういうふうに飾り、私のところに送ってきました。
Emiko has done like this.

ＤＹＢの名前にちなんで、「風」を感じる飾りつけにしようと思ってまずやってみたのですが、いくら「風」でも、全部飛んでいきそうに軽い感じです。
I meant to blow wind on the block. But my stitching is so light everything would be blown away.

少し足してみましたがやはり軽さは解消されません。
I've added a bit but still it looks too light.


最終的にはＥｍｉｋｏさんのリボン刺繍のバラと対に、私もリボン刺繍を足してみました。これで十分かどうかは不安ですが、一応完成です。
Though I am not sure if my SRE has balanced the whole weight, I feel finished now.

7 Things about Me

I have been tagged by Elizabeth Z for the "7 Things about Me". This time I am expected to write 7 things about me. Is there anything I would interest you?

1, When I was small, I was so shy I couldn't speak anything at school for a year. I didn't answer teacher's checking attendance, couldn't read textbook, only answered questions by writing on the blackboard or papers when required. Nobody heard my voice in the classroom. But after school I was always playing with my brother and boys outdoor.
2, I am a bookworm. Still I buy lots of books, more than I read.
3, I learned how to crochet at six but how to embroider at forty-six.
4, I am a claustrophobic. I don't like to take a seat between two people. And I hate a flight. Thinking about being closed in air for hours makes me feel sick.
5, I can live without television programms but videofilms.
6, I have been married for 32 years and have two sons and a daughter. My daughter is now studying machine knitting in Notthingham, England. Now she's is very busy in her final year.
7, I love to be at home much better than going out. But it doesn't mean I love household. I love to be at home sometimes alone best.

I am afraid everyone I want to tag has been already tagged.

新しいブログ A New Blog for Crazy Quilting International

私がメンバーでありかつ運営の一翼も担っているクレージーキルトのグループ、クレージーキルティング・インターナショナル（ＣＱＩ）の新しいブログができましたので、ご紹介したいと思います。今までメンバーしか見れなかった作品が一般公開になりました。

サンプラー・ラウンドロビン Sampler RR

もうすぐ始まるサンプラーＲＲ　というラウンドロビンに参加することにしました。昔、こういうブロックを手すさびに作ったことがあります。その後、これをもっときちんとした作品に発展させてみたいと、黒の布を集めてブロックを作っていたのですが、例によって例の如く、そのままずっと手付かずになっていました。それを使って少し形にしようという、またまた一石二鳥を狙った計画です。
I have joined "Sampler RR", which will start in June.

細かいハギレを適当にミシンで接いだ小さなピースを中心に置いて黒い布で囲み、これも使い残しの刺繍糸を片付けがてら、シームステッチの練習をしてみたものです。
A few years ago I just played making this sampler block as a stitching practice and thought to develope this Black on Black CQ project. I collected many black fancy fabrics and made a few blocks, but the project has been a UFO as usual.

黒い布は化繊ですがツヤがないので、写真にとるときれいにステッチが浮き立っています。





これが接いであったブロックの一枚で、ＲＲにはこれを使おうと思っています。ファンシーな布を使っているので、かえって写真ではきれいに写りませんでした。実際はもっと豪華ですので、ステッチを乗せればきれいになるはずだと思っています。
I would like to use this block. The photo dosen't look well but it does better in person.　

魔よけ人形追加 Spirit Doll Swap

前に一度書いたマスコット人形の交換ですが、5月12日着でアメリカに送らなければならないので、ここ二三日少し頑張りました。新たに三つ作りました。
